Nuclear weapons are Russia's ultimate insurance policy against NATO intervention in Ukraine. As their importance is emphasised, an ambitious new ballistic missile submarine has been revealed. The design, with hints of the latest Western thinking, represents the next generation after the Borei class.
Russian submarine design bureau Rubin has unveiled its latest design for a ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) at the Army 2022 defense expo. The new boat, named ‘Arcturus’ (Арктур) after the brightest star in the northern celestial hemisphere, is a radical design.
Most striking about the design is that it has an angled outer hull with sloping sides and blended lines. It has a chine running all the way along the side, resembling a modern low-observable aircraft.
These files will allow you to print out your own version of this concept submarine.
This model was designed for fairly easy and straightforward assembly. Part locations are easily identified.
The concept submarine had several design quirks that would make a functional RC submarine somewhat problematic, so I took liberties with the design, namely canting the rear fins outward rather than inward to create an X-tail rudder configuration for superior maneuverability. I also moved the forward dive planes much further ahead in the model to offer improved depth keeping capabilities.
Length: 922 mm
Width: 160 mmHeight: 146 mm (to top of sail)
Volume: Approximately 1100 cubic cm without supports. Allocate just over 1 spool of 1kg filament to complete the print.
All parts are less than 170mm in vertical height, making them suitable to print on almost any printer.
